![]() ![]() Sure, there are moments that revel in the 311 old-school vibe, but songs like "Seems Uncertain" and "Sometimes Jacks Rule the Realm" further exemplify 311's versatility as they delve into softer, more acoustic-sounding songs, much like they did on From Chaos with "Champagne," "I'll Be Here Awhile," and the super-hit "Amber." Led by the twin-vocal-assault of Nick Hexum (vocals/guitar) and SA Martinez (turntables), 311's five-man sound provides the listener with what could easily be described as the strongest rap-rock and hybrid existing today. Now that's not to say you won't find rock songs with tinges of rap running throughout the album, but you'll find on the whole that this album is more like 311's 2001 release From Chaos in terms of its softer sonic touch. And while their 12th album, Evolver, is built on the hybrid rock and rap-rock origins of the band, it strikes the listener as both surprisingly mellow and somewhat of an evolutionary departure from some of the their prior work, hence the irony tucked within the name of the album. Since that time, 311 has released 12 albums (three independent releases, seven major label releases, a live album, and an old-school compilation). ![]() The origins of the band began in the mid-to-late 80s, with several line-up changes and a few name changes before the band finally settled on the moniker 311 in the late 1980s (for those unfamiliar with the band, their name is taken from the universal police code for indecent exposure). 311 (pronounced 'Three-Eleven') is a band of five friends and musicians from Omaha, Nebraska. ![]()
